Editorial: Holiday Greedings
by: Sydney K.
It’s Christmas time! This happens to be most children’s favorite holiday, even for adults. But is Christmas all about the presents now? That seems what most kids love it for. If you took a deeper look into it, a deeper look into everyone’s mind, I bet you could find what Christmas really means to people. Has it turned from the Christian holiday that brings together friends and family to a commercialized holiday about “getting” things?
I asked a few people what the holidays meant to them, to get on the inside of how a variety of people are thinking. One student said, “Christmas means to spend time with my family and catch up with each other. We celebrate our religious beliefs, and celebrate all the things we have.” Another student said, “To just spend good time with my family and have fun with them, yeah know? And get presents…” He/she grins after finishing their sentence. So far only one student mentions presents, but the mention was very short, a last minute add. I asked one more person what they thought about Christmas, and they said, “I love the presents! That’s my favorite part!” I also asked them what happened when the didn’t receive a present from someone, and they replied, “I get really mad. My grandma only sent me a card last year. A card! What use is that to me? NOTHING!” Finally, the greed appears.
Christmas means different things to everyone, as you can see. But I guess it all depends on how it’s presented to you as a kid. It doesn’t really make a difference; it’s all in how you look at it. In my opinion, it should be about family, celebrating the religious significance, and just being together. Like I said though, It’s all in how you look at it.
