Editorial: My Beef with Winter Break
By: Ben K.
I have a real problem with winter break here in Frederick County. If it’s going to be just centered around Christmas then don’t call it winter break. Instead, make it through some of winter, not just around Christmas. If you’re going to center it around Christmas, just call it what you are making it, Christmas break.
Every year, Winter Break for FCPS gets closer and closer to Christmas, and doesn’t last as long. This year it starts ON December 24, school is only closed until the 31st. However, January 1st and 2nd are weekends. Now don’t get me wrong, depending on snow, schools might be closed for longer but a 10 day break which includes weekends doesn’t seem like much of a break especially if you are planning on going away.
The real reason I have a real problem with this is because not everyone celebrates Christmas. For instance some people celebrate Chanukah, which this year starts on the night of December 1st, and only runs through December 9th. No where close to “Winter Break”. Also some people celebrate Kwanzaa which granted does fall between December 26th and January 1st every year. But I’m sure people who don’t celebrate Christmas don’t really appreciate that it is centered just around, and made a point to be always off for Christmas.
Now those are just two examples of reasons, but take this into account, there are some people who don’t celebrate anything around that time. So I’m sure that they could have/ might have the same feelings as I do. Now I’m not asking for extra days off for some of those holidays, because I understand how that might not be easy or possible, but I’m just saying, please take everything I have just said into account for the future.
