Headlines-November is National Diabetes Month
By: Katelyn A. and Katherine C.
All across the country this month, people are learning about diabetes. Diabetes is classified as a metabolism disorder. There are three main types of this disease: type one, type two, and gestational.
Type one diabetes is contracted when you produce no insulin at all. It is typically diagnosed in children and young adults. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert sugar, starches, and other foods into energy.
When your body produces some insulin, but not quite enough, or your body ignores it, it is type two diabetes. This is the most common form of diabetes. Usually it is contracted if you are overweight or obese.
Gestational diabetes is contracted by pregnant women who have never had diabetes before, but have high blood sugar levels. If it is ignored or uncontrolled, it may harm the baby, but otherwise, the baby should be fine.
Here are eight ways to prevent diabetes: first of all, exercise is very important to lower your risk and boost your immune system. This and losing weight could help control almost all diabetes symptoms. In fact, 80% of all diabetics are overweight. By not eating trans fats, you are lowering your risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Another important way to prevent diabetes is to avoid eating foods with excess sugar or carbohydrates. Eating lots of fiber, which is found in raw fruits and vegetables, helps prevent diabetes. Smoking contributes to diabetes and lung cancer. Not drinking can prevent diabetes. Finally, always look for support in preventing diabetes.
