Ask the Potomac Press! (askpotomacpress@gmail.com)

Dear Potomac Press,
I feel that I'm missing too much school for appointments or various reasons. While I'm absent I feel as if I miss too much class. I think I'm falling behind in classes. Is there anything I should do to stop missing school?
Broken

Dear Broken,
This is a very common problem and you are not alone! Try to make your appointments after or before school or during a class that is not as important or that you won’t have a lot of make-up work. Talk to your parents about what time your appointments are. If you know that you are not going to be at school talk to your teachers before hand. When you get back to school after not being there make sure you get all your work and finish it as fast as possible. Also, don’t forget notes that say that you were absent. If you need help ask for tutoring or extra work that may help you. And make sure you study extra hard for quizzes and tests!
Thanks for your question,

Advice Needed...

I've got a major problem at school. I am being picked on in the hallways and I don't know what to do. The person bullying me acts like she is my friend so that teachers don't say anything, but I am NOT friends with her. I have told her to stop and she just won't. I don't want to be a snitch and tell a teacher or anything like that, but I hate walking in the hallway. Sometimes, I stay after class to talk to a teacher just so I don't run into this person in the hallway. What can I do without her finding out and me being called a snitch or a tattle tail??

Dear Twitch,
One thing you could is travel in groups from class to class. Walk with at least one other person you know. If you have someone with you, the bully will be less likely to approach you. Make sure the bully knows you are NOT their friend and that they need to stop. Be firm but not mean. If this continues you NEED to tell a teacher, even if you don’t want to. Find a teacher you trust, someone that you know will be able to keep the situation anonymous. Make sure you tell your parents what is happening too.

PP,

Since this is my last year in middle school, I am really starting to get worried about high school. My older siblings have told me that it is so much harder than middle school. The classes are harder, and you have to balance everything outside of school too. I am having troubles right now just keeping my grades up in middle school. How am I going to do well at BHS? Any tips?

Hitdog

Dear Hitdog,
Everyone gets nervous about going to a new school. Do you remember being nervous about going to middle school? You survived didn’t you? As your grades go, make sure you are paying attention in class, taking notes, doing your best and asking for help when you need. Practice your study habits now, so that you have them for high school. Make sure you always get your work in now, that is also a habit you will need in high school. Remember that school comes first and you might have to do school work instead of hanging out with your friends or doing something else out of school.
Thanks for your question,
