Sports: A Look Back at the Great American Race
by: Tyler B.
Gentlemen, start your engines. That’s right, the first race of the season was the Daytona 500. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was supposed to start at the pole for the first time ever in this race, but was knocked out of first after being wrecked in practice putting him in the back of the pack. This race was the 10th anniversary of Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s death when he crashed into the wall at 200 mph on the last turn of the race. On lap number three the whole track was silent for him, and all the fans held up a three on there hands. This race had some big surprises with a big 14 car crash early in the race taking out some of the big racers like Jimmie Johnson. There were a lot of cautions in this race; there were 14 of them giving the men more time to fill up, and get some new tires which made this race contain the most leader changes ever in the Daytona 500. With only 2 laps to go the Pepsi Cola fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. was hit in to the wall and couldn’t finish the race and had to be towed off the track. At 20 years of age, Trevor Bayne is the youngest person ever to take the checkered flag in the Daytona 500.
