Headlines: Next Year's FCPS Calendar Released
by: Ben K.
FCPS just recently released next year’s school calendar. Of course, everything is also based on when and/or if schools are closed so don’t get your hopes up because some things may change.
August 29th, 2011 is students first day of school, while as teachers have been setting up and preparing for three days by that point.
In September, we are off for three days (not in a row), and one two hour early dismissal. On Monday September 5th, 2011, we get off for the first time in the school year; this is because it’s Labor Day. The second day in September is the 23rd for fair day, yay. The Next time we get off is on Thursday the 29th schools are closed for the Jewish new year of Rosh Hashanah. The next day, September 30th is a two hour early dismissal for us, this is for a teacher work session and midterms.
Now, on to October. On October 3rd through the 6th, high school students favorite time, the HSA. On Thursday October 12th PSAT testing is held. On the 18th, elementary school evening conferences are held, and only the elementary schools open four hours late. On October 19-20, ES, MS, and HS conferences are held. On the 19th, all schools open four hours late for evening conferences, whereas on the 20th schools close three and one half hours early for afternoon conferences. One day after that on the 21st, schools are closed for regional/state training for teachers and staff.
Well, now onto one of the busiest months of the year. On Thursday November 3rd, believe it or not, the first term ends. On Friday the fourth, schools are closed, teacher work day. Wednesday November 23rd, schools are closed for Thanksgiving break. That Friday marks the end of the oh so long thanksgiving break. However then it goes to a weekend so it’s not that bad.
Wednesday December 7th, is mid-term, 3/8 of the way through the school year. Thursday the 22nd students get out two hours early and that marks the beginning of Winter Break. We come back on Tuesday January 3rd.
The very next week, January 9-12, the HSA strikes again. Then as a little present, schools get out early the next day, as it marks the end of the second term (first semester). After that, schools are closed on Monday the 16th for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The next day January 17th, we are off for a teacher work day; and on the very next day the second semester (third term) begins.
On to one of my favorite months, February. On Tuesday the 14th schools are closed because of Election Day. Next, on Friday the 17th, students get out two hours early for a teacher work session. On Monday the 20th schools are closed for Presidents Day. The next day is mid-term; wow, already? It seems like just last paragraph it began.
I guess I’ll move onto March. On March 1st conferences are held and all schools are opened four hours late. Friday March 2nd, schools close three and one half hours early for conferences. The next week from Monday until Wednesday is every student’s favorite time, the MSA. Then we get a present and the next day we get out two hours early for a teacher work session and the end of the third term. The next day we are off.
April ahoy! On Wednesday April Fourth, students get out two hours early. Then from Thursday the fifth until Monday the ninth schools are closed for spring break. Then from April 16th through May 4th the Science MSA comes to town. However on the third mid-term occurs. From Monday the 21st through Thursday the 24th the HSA strikes again. Then Memorial day schools are closed. (May 24th).
Now here are the facts for June. From Monday June fourth until Friday June eighth the High School Graduation ceremonies are going to be held. Then, the only other scheduled event is every student’s favorite day of the year, the LAST DAY OF SCHOOL!! This is Thursday June 14th.
