Sports: The Origins of NASCAR
by: Tyler B.
Nascar, the Redneck sport of America, was started by the bootleggers outrunning the cops during prohibition. They would have to make faster cars to outrun the cops because of the moonshine that was being illegally made and sold across the southern states. They started it up after they saw how much money that the mobsters had been making selling the liquor throughout the cities.
The cars that you see on TV now go about 200 mph, but the bootleggers cars only topped out at about 90 mph. The drivers had to know the back roads and mountain roads like they knew the back of their hand. If they were captured, they would have to go to jail and that was the thrill that pushed them to race each other for popularity.
