Sports: Mid-Maryland Girls Basketball Off to a Good Start
by: Alexis O. and Knicki B.
A couple of weekends ago, Brunswick’s Mid-Maryland Varsity Girls’ Basketball team played in a pre-season tournament at Linganore High School. The Varsity team went 2-1(2 wins, 1 loss) at the tournament.
They lost their first game 26-16 against Windsor Knolls, but the score should’ve been 21-16. One of the shots they made that shouldn’t have counted was a 3 pointer that was scored after they blew the whistle to call a foul, and another was a 2 pointer that rolled of the top of the rim and fell in. Though the officiating wasn’t the best, the girls still gave it their all. Even though they didn’t win their coach, Mike Zigler, said that it was still a great game especially considering Windsor Knolls had come in 1st place last year for Division 1 (it’s Brunswick’s first year playing in Division 1 in a long time) with a undefeated- record.
They won their second game 28-26 over Monocacy. At half time the Brunswick Varsity Girls had a huge lead of 22-12. Though Monocacy caught up and tied the game 22-22, Brunswick never gave up. The game was called fairly well and both teams played with all their might. Both coaches (Allen and Zigler) said that the girls played very hard and were just about where they wanted us to be by the beginning of the season.
Brunswick won again, against Catoctin, in their last game of the day 24-3. Once the girls got a huge lead and contained it, the coaches put in some of the players who had been sitting out most of the time.
