Editorial: The Rumor Mill
by: Sydney K.
We all know what rumors are. Odds are you’ve even had a few spread about you, even if you haven’t done anything. Some people start rumors out of jealousy, or some out of spite. Rumors are a pretty common thing for people, no matter the age or gender. It’s a sad thing.
The definition of rumor: a story or statement in general circulation without confirmation or certainty as to facts; gossip; hearsay. Rumors can be spread around on purpose or accidentally. But purposely or not, it’s still hurtful to the subject of the rumor. You may be thinking, “Well if they’re so bad, why doesn’t everyone try and stop them?” People do. But how do you stop something that happens accidentally? You could try and watch the things you say. If you know it’s not nice, don’t say it! If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Thumper from Bambi said that, so it’s pretty awesome advice.
Now what if the rumors are being spread on purpose? If you’ve been the victim of rumors, think back to it. Think why would they say that? Were they jealous? Did you provoke them? Or had you never talked to them before? Sometimes we know why a rumor goes around about us. Maybe you put the thought in their mind, gave someone a story who doesn’t like you that much. Maybe you didn’t do anything to deserve it. But either way, find out who started it! Ignore it! Do something to stop it. And another thing, when you hear a rumor, DO NOT BELIEVE IT! A rumor is NOT reliable. Most likely it’s not true. Even if you do believe it, don’t pass it on. If it’s no true, you’re just being mean. If it is, well it’s not you’re place to say something. Keep this in mind! Rumors are for chumps.
