Editorial: Arizona Gun Bill
by: Tyler B.
Recently a bill was sent to the Arizona legislation, stating that people would be allowed to carry guns onto community property. The reason the bill was brought up was because of the Tucson shooting in which thirteen were killed and seven injured. The law would allow citizens to carry guns in public, and even into the state capitol building.
In my opinion this bill should not be passed. I would want it to be passed except for a few parts of the bill that do not make much sense. For example, one section states that if your gun rights are not properly observed you can seize government property. It also says you can bring a gun into the state capitol building. Besides these few kinks in the bill I think the main idea is good. I would want the bill to be passed if it did not say you can seize government property and take a gun into the capitol building. If you are going to go crazy are you going to care if it’s against the law to have a gun on public property? You’re going to jail for life so the charges for having the gun won’t matter.
Some have different views. One BMS student said, “I disagree with this bill, because it allows people to walk into a public building with a gun without security to stop them from potentially killing or wounding innocent bystanders.” In a poll taken 8.3% of people were for the law, 8.3% were undecided and 83.3% were against it. Recently there have been shootings on university campuses including the one at Virginia Tech. These shootings are another reason to bring up this bill. The bill caused many people to cry foul, but if the details of the bill are worked out it could be passed.
