Headlines: A Closer Look at Bipolar Disorder

by: Julie H.

Have you ever been called bipolar, just because you went from really happy, to mad or sad in just a matter of seconds? You really probably aren’t bipolar. You’re really either having a bad day or mood swings. That’s normal. Bipolar Disorder isn’t just having mixed emotions in less than a minute. It’s really much more than that, and can be deadly.

There are two main moods in Bipolar Disorder. You are either very happy or extremely depressed. There usually isn’t an in between. The happy stage of Bipolar Disorder consists of these symptoms:
• Racing thoughts
• Easily distracted
• Increase in goal setting
• Exaggerated self-esteem
• More talkative than usual
• Sleeping less
• Adrenaline rushes

The depression stage consists of these symptoms:
• Depressed mood for most or all day
• Lack of interest in daily activities
• Weight gain or loss when not dieting
• Excessive sleeping
• Loss of energy
• Feels worthless
• Difficulty concentrating
• Possibly suicidal

You may be thinking “I have these symptoms.” Well there is a possibility that you do have bipolar disease but these aren’t all of the symptoms. Teenagers are always going through drama and such that could get them to be moody, but that doesn’t make you bipolar.

Bipolar Disorder is not a joke, and is a very serious matter. If you know anyone with this disorder who is not being treated by a doctor or medication, you need to keep an eye out for them, because one day they could hurt themselves or someone else.
