Headlines: An Annual Thanksgiving Tradition
By: Erin C., Kaylie K., Katherine C.
Does your family have any Thanksgiving traditions? Well if you don’t, you can start this year just by turning on the TV!! It’s the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade of course! This parade is really in New York but you can watch it on NBC starting at nine o’clock to about noon.
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade started in 1924 when many of the Macy’s department store workers were immigrants. They were proud of their new American heritage and they wanted to celebrate it with something that they loved in Europe – parades! Originally the animals in the parade were real and not balloons. The parades have been going strong for about 80 years! But they have had some hard times. In 1941, during World Word II, they had to cancel the parade to save the rubber. They still broadcasted but it was footage from the previous year’s parade.
There are a lot interesting things in the Macys Thanksgiving Day parade. Some of our favorite things are: Famous people sing on floats, Marching bands perform, Cheerleaders, Dance teams, Fancy blimps, and even the Rockettes. Some of the favorite balloons are Felix the Cat, Marx Brothers, Clifford the big red dog, Founding Fathers, Garfield, Barney, Big Bird, Charlie Brown, and the Jolly One himself, Santa Claus.
Be sure to tune in on Thanksgiving to see the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade!
