Headlines-The Importance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month
by: Erin C., Linda S., and Amy C.
Did you know breast cancer is the most common form of cancer? Or that in 2006, 40,820 women died from breast cancer? Well you need to know because it’s breast cancer awareness month!
Breast cancer is a deadly cancer. It happens when abnormal body cells form called tumors. This may be surprising but men can get breast cancer too! Women mostly get it because they have more breast tissue, that’s why it’s so rare for men to get it. The cancer can spread to other parts of the body like the bones and liver if not found early on.
Women get breast cancer from many different things. Any one can get it but there is three main factors doctors have found that make it more likely for women to get it. One of them is the person’s family history, if the woman has an aunt, mom, grandma, or sister then they are likely to get it also. Another factor is age, women have more risk as they get older, teens and women in their 20’s and 30’s are less likely to have breast cancer. The last main reason women get breast cancer is diet and other lifestyle choices for example, ladies who drink alcohol, smoke, eat unhealthy, and don’t exercise can get breast cancer easier.
Breast cancer is very hard on the women and her family. If the lump is found early on, after the treatment they still can live a normal life. If the cancer is not found right away then they still have to have treatment but it’s a lot harder for the cancer to go away. The main treatment is chemotherapy and after chemo the women is still very sick for a long time. They can also get the cancer again which makes this a very long process.
Scientist and doctors are looking for cures and medicines to prevent and heal all types of cancer. The best way for you to know if you have breast cancer is to get mammograms and check yourself regularly.
Do you want to help support a cure for breast cancer? Well there are many organizations you can donate to. For example you can donate to the Susan G. Komen foundation or Ellen for a Cure foundation by Ellen DeGeneres.
Breast cancer is a very serious disease. Lets hope that one day that there is not just a cure for Breast cancer but for all cancers.
