Editorial: The Worries of Today's Kids
by: Sydney K.
Kids these days, especially young girls, are all worried about their weight. Just walking into a locker room you can hear girls constantly criticizing themselves. You always, hear “I have thunder thighs,” “Look at all these jelly rolls,” “You’re so much skinnier than I am,” blah blah blah. All they do is criticize. “Why are they doing this?” some may ask. Kids have this idea in their mind that “good-looking” is stick thin. That the only way someone can accomplish being attractive is to look like those supermodels you see in magazines, or bodybuilders. But that’s wrong.
People are becoming unhappy with themselves, girls and guys, kids and adults. It’s usually from the image people have on TV. For guys, muscular skinny guys, for girls, ultra skinny girls. But that’s not how everyone has to or should be. For girls, think about it. Do those supermodels look healthy? Guys, do you really want to be so muscular your arms are bulging under your shirts? I wouldn’t want that, and I don’t understand why some would. How about just being healthy? Being healthy should be more important than being skinny. In fact, healthy is better than skinny.
If you’re a guy or a girl, it doesn’t matter. Skinny has always been the way to look. But those skinny people aren’t always the healthiest, or even real. Most of the media edits the pictures of people they have to make them more toned, fit looking, smaller, etc. They’re airbrushed, not natural. People should be comfortable with their own bodies. If you’re not, work to change it. If you feel like you’re overweight, exercise and work to change it. You can do anything you want in life. You just have to work for it. Exercise at least an hour 5 times a week. You’re body sometimes mixes up thirst and hunger, so when you’re hungry drink a bottle of water. Instead of eating the junk food we all know and love, go for healthy fruits and vegetables. Some people don’t eat breakfast in the morning. But you should. It starts your metabolism earlier so you can start burning calories earlier in the day. Just remember, no matter what you do, stay healthy! That’s the most important thing. Skinny, curvy, it doesn’t matter. Just be healthy.
Some resort to plastic surgery to change their bodies. But you should be happy who you are. No one looks the same, and you should be happy who you are. Everyone is special in their own way. Someone has said, “I personally don't give a crap about what other people think. I do care about my appearances but somebody will always have something negative to say. At the end of the day realize that YOU BELIEVE that YOU LOOK GOOD!” That’s a really positive way to think. If you think you look good, others will too! If they don’t, who cares? As Dr. Seuss once said, “Be who you are, and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” That’s a great thing to go by. It’s true. Those who think you don’t look good don’t matter. All that matters is if you’re happy with yourself. If you’re not, then work to change it! Exercise, cut out the junk food, and just be healthy!
You are who you are, this is true. But with all the people who don’t like who they are this becomes a problem. Everyone has struggles with weight. Some are lucky enough not to have to deal with it, but most other people do. So work at it. Work to be the size you want. You can be whatever you want to be in life as long as you work for it. So work hard, be healthy, do well in school blah blah blah. Whatever. Just be happy. That’s the most important thing over all.
P.S. If you don’t like exercise (like lifting weights, running on a treadmill, etc) then try a sport. Go out for the school soccer team (any team of any sport you can think of) or even just get together with a group of friends every few days to play an outside game. Even hide and go seek in the dark has running. Exercise is important, so be active all you can. Just don’t over do it. Over and out! :D
